Discovering Brooklyn: MOTHXR

Monday, 17 November 2014

I miss New York.
I miss Williamsburg.
I want to go back and explore more of Brooklyn.
Speaking of Brooklyn, I've recently discovered a new band from there who just so happen to have Penn Badgley as their frontman (Gossip Girl's Dan Humphrey). MOTHXR have caught me completely by surprise. From first listen, I instantly loved their sound and I've had 'Easy and 'Stranger' on repeat.

Their experimental, psychedelic indie vibe definitely has me yearning for New York. I want to vintage shop; coffee sip, bar hop and gig go!
I'd love to catch MOTHXR at one of their home shows, in a tiny dive bar somewhere in Brooklyn. There's nothing better than seeing a band live. Unfortunately, I've just missed my chance to see them over here in England. They played Manchester back in September. Just my luck....

I'm rather choosy with the indie genre. There's a lot of bands I wouldn't give the time of day but there's something about MOTHXR that's intriguing and I'm looking forward to hearing more.

In a recent interview with MTV, bass player and producer Jimmy Giannopoulos said something that made me stop what I was reading and think 'what?, they're definitely not in the same league'.

He said "We want everyone to look at us the way the UK looked at Iron Maiden, Joy Division, Small Faces, T-Rex, Zombies, Clash. They are really cool bands. Bands where you can feel the vibe, and you can feel that band."

Penn backed it up with "They were doing what they were doing. They were less concerned with what people wanted to hear and making a sound they wanted to make."

In a way I suppose that's the essence of rock 'n' roll and I applaud any band that just wants to be themselves regardless of any opinion. Whether people (myself included) end up seeing them in the same way as the bands mentioned above, is just a matter of time. They've made a bold statement, one I admire. Now they just have to follow through.
